The science lab was fully refitted a few years ago and is constantly upgraded. There is a range of equipment to compliment the theory lessons with practicals. Students are taught to follow the GCSE Core Science curriculum from a younger age. Once achieved, they may progress on to the additional and separate science GCSEs, allowing them to leave Sands with a potential 4 GCSEs in Science. Every student that has been to Sands in recent years has left with one science, and most get at least one more. Some have left with four.
As from this year, new GCSE students (O3) will be studying the latest “Science A” course from the AQA exam board. It has been revised to bring it up to date, and the first exams will take place next year. It has three exams plus coursework, which will be spread out as much as possible for ease and practicality. After this first GCSE is completed early students will be able to study several more as they feel they need to.
Science for the younger part of the school has an equal emphasis on having fun and learning. We follow the national curriculum, but take no national exams. Of course if students do want to sit exams they can be arranged! It has been said that success at GCSE level in Sands is partly due to not putting off pre-GCSE students by being too serious and pressured.
