Susan Widlake BSc (Hons) PGCE
I graduated in Psychology from UCL and trained as a teacher in London. I worked for the London Borough of Redbridge Language Support Service for ten years, developing language and literacy across the curriculum and supporting pupils with English as an Additional Language and/or Special Needs. As part of this role I co-ran an in-service diploma course for teachers in language and literacy in multicultural classrooms.
I became very interested in self directed learning and, when I had my own children I home educated them along largely self directed lines but with some systematic input in the areas of literacy and maths. I ran writers’ groups and tutored other home educated children during this period. At secondary age, my son went to Sands school and it was a great success. After he left I was a school governor here for some years. When an opportunity arose to work at Sands I applied and am now working at the school supporting students’ learning in various subjects, both in the classroom and one to one.
