Clare Tyler, BA Hons

Art Teacher (and general office)

I started working at Sands as one of the cooks and I was immediately made to feel at home at this friendly school. I was then fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to assist Steve in the art room for two years and I am now teaching art to the younger part of the school.

We draw, print, paint, make 3D objects and look at art of many kinds from across history and place.
We learn through looking, experimenting and persistence. Being bold and courting failure come high on the list.
It is the beginning of a journey and is enormous fun, joyful and creative. I believe that the teaching of art to any age should aim to embrace the principles of care and intention, provide basic foundations of artistic practice and nurture an appreciation and understanding of visual culture.
And above all that it can hone our ability to see, and that has to be life enhancing for everyone.

I am also love helping students with exciting collaborative projects, like building a papier mache polar bear for a climate change protest march and a Dinosaur which talks!

As well as the Art I manage the school office one morning a week.
