The first priority for maths at Sands is to help students become confident in the subject. This means differentiating considerably so that everyone is doing work they can do. Another tool to make students comfortable in maths, is to always allow them the choice to leave, not come at all, come to another years groups class, or just do a very small amount (eg just 5 question). This may seem counter intuitive, but choice is key to feeling safe in what can otherwise be a difficult class. Because of this differentiation, I do very little teaching from the front, but instead help students as they work through the set work.
For the lower half of the school, I have a core curriculum, which already has three levels of difficulty, but for some students they either need work harder of easier than this. For the exam students, I have a set out Curriculum, with accessible resources to cover each topic and students work through these at their own pace.
