At Sands School we are very fortunate to have a team of amazing dedicated and talented women who make our school a truly wonderful place to grow and learn.
On International Women’s Day we want to celebrate the women that make Sands possible.
A huge thank you to our creative heroes Heidi, Alice and both the Georgia’s who help our students express themselves every day, to our biology specialist Anna, our incredible linguist Bridget, our amazing IT teacher Kimberley who reminds us everyday tech is cool and girls can be geeks too, the support team that go the extra mile for every child Emma, Jane, Bethany, Bridget, Kate and Amber, our wonderful counsellors Kate and Lizzie, our school cook Eleni who keeps us well fuelled and finally, the Admin team the female engine room that keeps the school running Pamela, Leah, Kate, Jemma and Kezia.

Bridget and Martin had a fantastic time in February with ten students from O3 and Y2 earlier in February on our language trip to Toulouse. Staying right in the city centre they explored the city’s museums, cafes, shops and architecture. They shopped and cooked for their own meals, got sprayed by a giant Minotaur and had great fun jump scaring Martin. Oh la la!

Last Wednesday we were honoured to receive a visit and talk by Tim Locke who shared with his family’s story. The visit was organised by Richard through the charity Generation 2 Generation who enable speakers to tell their family Holocaust stories using eye-witness survivor testimony in an age appropriate way, keeping the memory and lessons of this period of our history alive.
Tim shared with us how his mother Ruth and uncle Raimund survived the Holocaust by travelling to England on the kindertransport in 1939 and were taken in by a family that his grandmother Vera had met while studying. It was an incredibly moving experience. Staff and students were struck by how the Nazi’s oppressed not only Jewish people but other minority groups in at first small ways which built and built to the eventual genocide. We were also struck by his story of the many acts of kindness by strangers who helped the family access food, shelter and ultimately saved the lived of Tim’s parents.

Traitors fever definitely swept through Sands along with the rest of the country this Autumn and so what better way to end the year and bring the community together than a whole school game of intrigue, suspicion and murder.
63 initial players started out on Monday and were rapidly whittled down to 14 by Friday’s end game showdown. Over the week there were many wild theories banded about, faithful’s fell by the dozen at the hands of the Traitors though a lucky few slept peacefully with a shield to guard them, guilty and innocent were banished at the round tables and a lot of fun and silliness was had by all.
Mirroring the TV show we had ludicrous misspellings of names at the round table, dramatic banishment walkouts and a shock result.
Congratulations to the most devious two Traitors who will decide how to spend the prize voucher on something fun for the school.

Congratulations to Georgia for organising another spectacular Christmas Concert. There was an incredible array of music talent and choices to entertain us all and see out 2025, from Billie Eilish to Chopin to sing-a-long Christmas tunes. It’s always amazing to see how people have grown in confidence, skill and musicianship, but also to see our brand new students working so well together to pull off a performance after just 3 months of practice. Well done everyone!
